Over the years I've been blessed with an opportunity to play with some really great players. Some of them are unknown outside of small regions of the country. People like Will McCabe, perhaps the best string man alive, and my friend and musical compatriot Jim Robertson, a consummate multi-instrumentalist, adept at absorbing and assimilating musical styles as diverse as Virginia old time, and Indian Raga's on his Sarod. Others more well known like Brian Mullens from Colcannon, and Laughing Hands, or Elliot Wadopian, bassist extraordinaire. The extraordinary blues vocalist and stylist Tom Hailey who is well known throughout Central VA and Richmond, and Michael Erwin who is one of the most creative musical brains on the planet. Creating his eclectic Avant-Savant jazz in Richmond. Some like my brother Shawn Dempsey, never aspired to be a known player but still mesmerized his audiences in small cafe's and clubs with his chord melody virtuosity, and his compositional talents.
Today I'm working with Jim Robertson on a new project called "Out Of A Blue Sky" which attempts to simply meld our own sound with the songs we love, both original and covers of tunes from composers as diverse as Joni Mitchel, Miles Davis, Leonard Cohen, and old blues masters from the early 20th century.
Included here are some solo works as well. These are my own compositions.
A recent project Top Secret was dedicated to the memory of my late brother Shawn, and his original compositions. More can be heard and learned about that project here by simply following the link to the Top Secret Page. (which I hope becomes far from secret. Shawn's work holds its own against any contemporary songsmith's).
