Today I'm working with Jim Robertson on a new project called "Out Of A Blue Sky" which attempts to simply meld our own sound with the songs we love, both original and covers of tunes from composers as diverse as Joni Mitchel, Miles Davis, Leonard Cohen, and old blues masters from the early 20th century.
The songs
Do You Love An Apple This tune is mostly an original composition of mine that has worked into it the melody of a beautiful old song covered by the Bothy Band by the same name. I think Paddy Keenan might approve.
Red House Road (The Road to Charlotte Courthouse). Is an original composition of mine.
The Chords And The Truth. A Ry Cooder song off his album "My Name Is Buddy". It really speaks to a lot of what is going on out there today.
Beeswing is Jim and my arrangement of the Richard Thompson song.
The Parting Glass is our normal closing song, a beautiful old song that goes back at least to the 18th century, and perhaps before. It was popularized during the clearance years, and has become a sort of second national anthem to both the Scots and the Irish.
River is an instrumental version of Joni Mitchell's song. (we daren't sing it.. some one would shoot us).
Honeysuckle Rose is our romp through an old standard.
It Really Is A Wonder is a song I've written which many of you who know me will think they know comes from, and it may surprise you to find out you're wrong. This song was written about and out of a conversation I had about 20 years ago with Janie's 98 year old grandmother "Pola". This is a temporary version. Warren owes me the vocals, and Pat still needs to get the real bass track into it.
