After a long battle with brain cancer, our brother Shawn passed away in 1999. He left a us a treasure trove of memories and MUSIC.
About a year after he passed, Tom Hailey and I met at my parents farm in VA to go through his few meager belongings. Drawings, letters and papers. We had heard from a friend of ours Steve Freeman, that while visiting Shawn, he'd had played for him a tape of songs he and Willis Turner had written, with Shawn both playing and singing the tunes. Shawn hated his voice, and I don't know whether the 'Top Secret" label he hand made and cut out, then placed on the tape was to keep people from hearing his voice or, a playful attempt to screw with future plagiarists. At any rate, he almost succeeded, and this treasure most likely would have at some point ended up in a dumpster, if we hadn't re-discovered it.
Each of the 13 songs on the tape are incredible pieces of songwriting, both musically and lyrically. I promised my parents and Tom, that I would make sure this music got the production it deserved in a studio. It took ten years for me to get through the job of transcribing and arranging the material, finding the musicians, raising the money and the rest. The result is a Jazz Blues gem, with the vocals of Tom Hailey, and some of the best players in the Mid Atlantic region giving voice and note to this great collection of music.
